Hello people.
I'm a 25 yr old IT sys admin, living in England. I had previously noticed insignificant, barely visible floaters in my younger years, one or two tiny strands when looking up at a very bright sky. I figured this was fairly normal, the sky was particularly bright and it was just the way my eye was dealing with the extreme amount of light. When I was 16 my optician noticed something in my eye, a tiny scarring he described, and referred me to the opthalmologist at the hospital. He had a nose about and decided it was something that must have been there all the time (I couldn't see any shadows or floaters), once he pointed out where it would be in my field of vision and roughly what it would look like I could then see a small black mark, like a floater, way off to the side, where I would not see unless I looked for it.
Anyway, that was that, no other problems until a couple of weeks ago, I noticed a spot in my right eye field of vision, a floater, with it I see strands, there's also one in my left eye now too, smaller but still definitely there. Went to optician who had a bit of a dilatey look about, said retina looked healthy etc. in both eyes, still chronically worried and depressed I went to the opthalmist at the hospital two days later, as I thought they may have got worse, I was certainly at my wits end. He did a thorough examination and said that both eyes look fine. Now I started to relax a little but am still concerned, depressed etc. I feel like I am constantly waiting for other things to happen, flashing lights, more floaters, "dark curtains" - other indications something is going wrong.
Anyway, hope you are all well, as I have been searching the internet for info on retinal detachment etc. I have seen many discussion groups and bulletin boards, these things seem very common in young people, I have heard no end of people mentioning their appearance whilst in mid twenties etc - I've been told this is common in people over 65, that made me feel better! I'm 40 years advanced!
It's made me wonder if there are peple that I know who have them, however insignificant and un-noticeable, I'll bet there's a few - I haven't wanted to tell my friends, doesn't help me forget and get on with things when I have to give several updates to people all asking the same question! If other people were doing the same, you'd never know.
Perhaps I should have posted this somewhere else, but this is my intro, this is me.
It is comforting to know that you're not alone, I thought I was victim of some incredibly rare thing, I've been more scared and depressed than ever these past two weeks, hopefully things getting better now though.
Take care
Adrian
