I am interested in laser surgery for disruption of eye floaters. I have one large floater with few strings. I heard Dr. Geller has been performing this surgery for a long time. What do you think?

I'm really in the same boat as you are Edwin, except my two floaters probably aren’t as large as yours. I've wanted to visit Dr. Geller for awhile now, but as yet can't afford it. I would like to hear Dr. Gellers opinion as to what he thinks can be done with my vision. Eventually I'll get to Florida for that exam. For now I just look at the pretty flies buzzing around in the daylight.
Truly Edwin you have to read all the posts on this and other boards and draw your own opinion if the laser procedure is worth pursuing.

Hi I am a floater sufferer and also a newly qualified doctor....i went to see Mr Steven Bailey, an Opthalmologist based in Harley St, London just this week. He is one of the few ppl in the world who treat floaters with laser disruption and since i'm based in London and these d**n floaters are driving me crazy, i thought i'd pay the 200 pound fee to go and see him....i only had money to lose i guess!! Anyway he is a very nice man, was very sympathetic about the problem but after several opthalmological examinations (including that awful three way contact lens which made me so uncomfortable but i put on a brave face!), he told me that my floaters are not suitable for laser treatment. I kind of expected this since i went to see Dr Karichoff about 4 years ago when i first got floaters (after laser correction surgery) and Dr Karichoff told me then he could not see any floaters. In my opinion these things have gotten worse in recent years and i was reassured to hear that Mr Bailey could actually see my floaters! (i felt like at least i wasn't going nuts...hooray!). However, he told me they are too anterior in the vitreous to target with laser, so i'm back to square 1....live with them..... I always thought that my floaters were too close to the retina which made them bigger....i think i read this somewhere in a floater forum....but in fact, as Mr Bailey explained, the further away from the retina the bigger floaters usually get...i hope i heard this right....i always thought the opposite (what with my humble medical knowledge!) but of course i did not argue with the kind doctor. Anyway, i hope this helps some of you out there. If you want to contact Mr Bailey (actually his good wife Jennie who does all his scheduling) then the website is www.eyecarelondon.comPS Just for the record i have no conflict of interests by posting this here, despite being a doctor myself!!! The only 2 interests i have right now are 1) to practise medicine....and 2) to find a cure for floaters.....! We live in hope fellow floater sufferers.

I think a cure will exist if they can solve the problem of cataract after vitrectomy which is a guaranteed certainty ( at this time ). Perhaps this will change.

Patel: The cure is the floater only victrectomy, which is an option that is currently available. There are risks, sure, but they are minimal risks. There are reputable surgeons performing FOVs in England and also in Europe, in places like Belgium where Dr. Staimans, one of the top FOV experts, practices. Good luck.

Age 65. I had cataract surgery IOL. to get my vision back, but large condensate floater still blocked good vision. Had two laser treatments which cleared out front part of floater. But anterior is too close to retina. So now I am scheduled for floater only victrectomy. Hope this finally does it.
