Hi,
Yen and I send an e-mail to about 500 eyedoctors throughout the whole world to boost the visitors rate of www.eyefic.com and to hopefully get some responses. The responses we got until now are posted below.
An Italian doctor: I use to perform 25 gauge vitrectomy for vitreous floaters with excellent
results.
A Brazilian Doctor: people who are bothered by floaters need psycghological attention. I have more serious problems to work on.
An American doctor: Thank you for sharing your infromation and website. Perhaps some
> physicians dont take floaters seriously, but on the ohther hand the real question is what can be done about them.
I do not do vitrectomies, so not an issue for me as a physician, but the problem is theat even relatively "safe" 25 guage vitrecomies can have
devastating complications (altough uncommonly).
An Arab doctor who worked in Germany: In the past I was against performing FOV surgery. However, back in 1996 I had some patients with severe psychological problems because of eyefloaters that convinced me about doing the surgery to them. When the results turned out to be very good, I started doing this surgery on a regular basis.
From 1997 till 2003 i performed 911 FOV surgeries witbh the 20G procedure. because the surgery only takes 40 minutes, complication risks are much lower then general vitrectomies performed for retinal problems. In 911 cases I got 41 cases of cattaract, especially in older patients. I had 4 cases of complications of some retinal problems but those where fixed very easily. I didnt have any case of infection. In 2003 I started to use the 25G procedure. This procedure is a little safer because of the shorter surgery time (about 30 minutes, which is about 10 minutes shorter then the old procedure). I performed 109 fov surgeries with the new procedure. I got 7 cases of cattaract. However, all patients were satisfied. For nearsighted people, cattaract can be an advantege because they wont need glasses anymore to see far away. however, they will need readingglasses.
The biggest advantage of the 25G procedure is the patients comfort. Because sutures are rarely needed, eye irritation is eliminated.
